project:
NEW YORK BERLIN

preview
details:

available as:
audiovisual installation (∞ loop mode) - musical shorth-lenght film (5'/15')

abstract:

this work is a reflection about metropolis as modernist poetics inspired by two paradigmatic texts:

Berlin Alexanderplatz by Alfred Doblin and Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos.

focusing on the very peculiar charachteristic of modernity, the editing of the images, exlusively selected from vintage material, is such as to bring out the limits of perception, which can not focus on a plurality of visual events

proposed simultaneously.

is exactly the crisis of perception, overwhelmed by a wealth of information of all kinds in modern society, that is reflected iin the transformation of the city into a metropolis.

the transition from the static nature of the pre-modern eras to the dynamism of modernity, as developed by artistic movements from early twentieth century such as Futurism and Vorticism.

the soundtrack is composed using a huge quantity of sampled sounds, including one of the earlier electronic devices which was created in that period: the termin.
